Ricardo Cavolo "101 Movies to Watch Before You Die"

Ricardo Cavolo was born in 1982 in Salamanca, Spain, and is now based in Barcelona. Ricardo grew up around brushes, colors, and paintings in his father's painting studio. Cavolo's eclectic style is based on relationships with folk art, traditional and modern tattoo culture, European religious imagery and the tribal arts. His art is all about stories, characters, and their experiences across time. Cavolo often focuses on portraiture; these depictions propel protagonists to champion their unique tales. Referencing religious and historical fictional illustrations, his use of symmetry and symbolism connect to a modern and playful audience. 

101 Movies to Watch Before You Die comprises 26 illustrations from the eponymous book. It is an outpouring of Ricardo's cinematographic loves, a "love story told in installments," starting with Méliès’s "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" and "Casablanca" to "Citizen Kane," "The Godfather," and "Star Wars." Cavolo's father nicknamed him "Jamfry," the Spanish version of Humphrey because apparently as a boy he was tough, serious, and brave like Humphry Bogart. Cavolo quips that from then on his life became inextricably linked to the actor: "he has always been a projection of myself."

Cavolo’s portfolio features commissioned public murals and art exhibitions across the globe from Paris, London, Moscow, and Mexico City to Hong Kong, Montreal, and Madrid. Cavolo’s body of work includes collaborations with Bally, Zara, Alexander McQueen, and Jose Cuervo among others.
